Membrane Degasification

Gas Transfer Membranes (GTMs) have a pore size of about 0.03 microns small enough to prevent water from passing through, but large enough to allow dissolved gases such as CO2 to pass through. Filtered air can be used on the outside of the membrane to sweep the CO2 out of the water. GTMs can also be operated under a vacuum to remove both CO2 and dissolved O2. Unlike forced-draft and vacuum degasifiers, membrane degasifiers utilize a low-pressure drop so that repressurization pumps are unnecessary. This ensures a smaller footprint than forced draft degasifiers and vacuum degasifiers require.

Other GTM benefits include:
  • Low operating costs
  • Accurate gas control
  • Modularity for easy expansion to handle larger flow rates or tighter gas specifications
  • Stable operation
  • Minimal instrumentation
  • No chemical introduction
  • Reduced ion-exchange regeneration
  • Protection from bacteria and other airborne contaminants coming in contact with water during operation
